Girls win district championship, begin state tourney play on Sat.

(Photo courtesy of Pam Hall.) The Washington-Wilkes Senior League Girls Softball All-Star team won the District 6 championship in Athens Tuesday, giving them a berth in the state tournament.

The girls took the first game over Athens in only four and a half innings, after running up a 17-1 score, and took the same number of innings to win the second game 11-1.

Lindley Hall pitched four innings in each game, and Diundra Doughty pitched one inning in each.

“The girls won on strong pitching, hard hitting, and almost flawless defense,” said Coach Bob Guin, who coaches the All-Star team with Mark Ward.

All-Star players include Hall, Doughty, Liz Grant, Lindsey Guin, Meghan Arnold, Elizabeth Duggan, Whitney Carani, Ashley Burt, Shareka King, Macey Smith, and Angela Kirkland.

The team will play in the state tournament Saturday in Cartersville. The first game begins at 1:30 p.m.
