Candidates who expect to run for Washington City Council in the upcoming election need to mark the date September 12 on their calendars. That’s the day that qualifying opens for Washington’s November 8 municipal election.

Qualifying candidates will vie for the District 1 seats of Earlene King and Patricia Wilder, and the District 2 seat of Pamela Eaton. Maceo Mahoney has been openly campaigning for one of the District 1 seats for months, and several other candidates are rumored to be eyeing a council seat. Supervisor of Elections Judge Jim Burton said that municipal qualifying for the fall election opens at the Wilkes County courthouse Monday morning, September 12, at 8:30 a.m. and closes Friday, September 16, at 4:30 p.m.

At that time, potential candidates may file a Notice of Candidacy to have their names placed on the Municipal General Election Ballot.

For write-in candidates, September 23 is the last day to file and publish a notice of intention to be a write-in candidate in the election.

October 11 is the last day to register to vote in the November 8 election.
