Asleep at the wheel

Wilkes County first responders, rescue squad, EMTs, deputies, and Washington police teamed up last week to rescue a 42-year-old Grovetown man who fell asleep at the wheel and crashed his Nissan into a culvert on the Thomson Highway near Upton Mill. The driver’s legs were crushed between the car’s floor and dashboard, and rescuers used the Jaws of Life to open the car up and free the injured man. He was taken to the Medical College of Georgia by air ambulance. Many of those helping in the rescue were attacked by fire ants whose mound was disturbed by the crash.
