‘Smoke on the Mountain’ opens tonight at WLTCo.

The musical comedy, “Smoke On the Mountain,” opens at The Playhouse on North Alexander Avenue Thursday, October 13, at 8 p.m. Reservations may be made by calling 678-9582. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door.
Other performances will be presented on Saturday, October 15, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, October 16, at 3 p.m. Next week’s performances will be on Friday and Saturday, October 21 and 22. at 8 p.m.
The play is set in the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in the hills of North Carolina in 1938. The Sanders Family Singers are featured in a Saturday Night Singing at the church.
The cast includes Rick Price as Burl Sanders, and Kay Nelms as his wife, Vera, the father and mother of the Sanders family. Dr. Stan Coe is cast as the wayward brother, and Cindy Russell as the sister who signs but doesn’t sing.
Emma Collins and Joseph Baldwin are the teenage twins; and Brian Baldwin is the pastor of the church. Rosemary Hopkins and Anna Norman are spinsters who make big contributions to the church but do not approve of instruments (and a few other things) in the church.
A bluegrass-gospel ensemble accompanies the family in singing.
Jo Randall is directing the show and Nora Dukes is music director. Tickets are $10 each.
Following the opening performance on Thursday, October 13, the annual Washington Little Theater Gala will be held at the Sleighter House adjacent to the old North Alexander School Building.
