Beta Sigma Phi discusses plans for Nancy C. Long Walk of Hope
The Eta Omicron Chapter, Beta Sigma Phi, met by the pool at the home of Mable Tucker on Tuesday, September 20.
Lee Durham provided Georgia Caviar and chips for an appetizer.
During the business meeting, the chapter’s cancer drive, the Annual Nancy C. Long Walk of Hope, was discussed and scheduled for Friday, November 4, in Downtown Washington. The general public is invited to walk laps around the Square beginning at 6 p.m. Donations may be given or luminaries may be purchased in honor or memory of loved ones from any sorority sister. Anyone interested in purchasing a long sleeve t-shirt with the cancer walk logo should contact Sabrina Bennett, chapter president, by October 20. The cost of each shirt is $10.
A percentage of funds raised during this drive is sent to the American Cancer Society earmarked for Breast Cancer Research and monies are also used for a local cancer fund and the Wills Memorial Hospital.
The sorority voted to continue its annual support of the Cancer Relief Fund established by Bunny Boyd, a cancer survivor. This fund assists local cancer victims. One of the services provided is gas to and from treatments. Due to the tremendous rise in gas prices and a request from Mrs. Boyd, the sisters voted to increase the chapter’s contribution and hold additional funds in reserve to help with emergency needs of the Relief Fund.
Because the sorority is the largest annual supporter, Joan Geddings, treasurer of the Eta Omicron Chapter, has been appointed to the board of this organization. The sisters of Beta Sigma Phi are issuing a challenge to all Washington-Wilkes organizations to budget funds annually for this much needed effort.
The two Washington Beta Sigma Phi chapters are planning their joint scholarship dance with a St. Patrick’s Day theme for March 2006 at the Washington-Wilkes Country Club. The purpose of this dance is to fund the annual scholarship these two chapters award to a graduating senior. Dance details will be available after the first of the year.
After the meeting, members enjoyed a delicious dinner of chicken salad, crackers, congealed salad and sliced tomatoes. Hosting with Mrs. Tucker were June Baston and Joan Geddings.
