Formation of disaster relief team will begin with meeting on Nov. 1
An early response team is being formed in Wilkes County to help with natural disasters both present and future, and Rev. Gale Seibert says that anyone interested in helping can come get information on how they can train to help, even for a few days.
“It’s not a Methodist thing at all. It’s for anyone who’s been touched by the needs we’ve all seen in the Gulf,” she said.
The general information session is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday night at First United Methodist Church in Washington for individuals who might be interested in becoming a part of a team for disaster relief.
“People willing to commit three to five days to possibly go to Hurricane Katrina/Rita sites or other disaster sites are asked to attend this session,” coordinator Tena Blakey said.
To meet the ongoing need for disaster relief volunteers, additional training will take place in December, she said. “UMCOR estimates they’ll be assisting with the rebuilding process for ten years with Hurricane Katrina/Rita so volunteers are still needed.”
“We’re seeing now that the need for disaster relief volunteers for Katrina could go on for 10 years,” Seibert said. “So if you’ve had the urge to help, this is the perfect opportunity.”
