First Baptist Senior Choir presents Christmas cantata Sunday evening
The Senior Choir of the First Baptist Church of Washington will present its Christmas cantata this Sunday evening at the church. Under the direction of Patricia Bonner Burton, the Senior Choir of the First Baptist Church will present the exciting Christmas cantata, “Gloria In Excelsis Deo,” on December 18 at 7 p.m.
The cantata, created and arranged by Tom Fettke, is a celebration of the majesty and timelessness of the Christmas message with a refreshing blend of works of the classical masters, traditional new carols, and contemporary songs.
The first movement opens with the organ and piano setting the scene over the hills of Bethlehem as the angels announce the birth of the Christ child with “Angels We Have Heard On High.” The choir then echoes the sentiment of the heavenly beings with “O Thou That Tellest Good Tidings.”
This musical celebration reminds us to “Rejoice with Exceeding Great Joy” for “The Lamb of Christmas” has come to earth. The last movement, entitled “Gloria,” includes Handel’s “And the Glory of the Lord.” The popular “Hallelujah Chorus” is a glorious conclusion to the work.
Soloists for the evening are Anne Tiller, Gail Duggan, Shirley Gunter, Kay Nelms, Sarah Peacock, Tom Wells, Joseph Baldwin and Tom Duggan. Accompanists are Jane R. Newsome, organ; and Peyson Moss, piano.
The public is invited.
