Wilkes Co. members attend annual meeting of Broad River Soil & Water Conservation District

A large delegation of affiliate members attended the annual meeting of the Broad River Soil & Water Conservation District at the Elberton Country Club Thursday, December 8.

Marvin McAvoy and Joe Bennett represent Wilkes County as district supervisors.

McAvoy presented the district annual report which showed that the district received a total of $153,395.00 in federal funding provided by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) through the Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP), the Grazing Land Reserve Program (GRP), and the Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program (WHIP).

Counties in the Broad River District are Banks, Elbert, Franklin, Hart, Madison, Oglethorpe, and Wilkes.

Billy and Barbarianne Gaulding Russell, 12 Oaks Farm, received the Conservation Farm Family Award presented by Larry Gillespie of Wilkes County on behalf of AgGeorgia Farm Credit.

Barbarianne Gaulding-Russell is District Chairman and introduced the speaker, Georgia State Representative Tom McCall, who gave a report on “Water Issues Facing Georgia.”

Entertainment was by the Liberty Baptist Church Quartet composed of Andy Buchanan, Cindy Buchanan, Felicia Peeples, and Dr. Paul Raber.

Wilkes County affiliate members and their standing include Thompson Gas & Oil Inc., Kerry McAvoy, Woodmen of the World, Farmers & Merchants Bank, and Mar-Leta Farms, Gold Membership; George Wheatley, Palmer Equipment Company Inc., Kyle Brown, Joe Riley, Herman Wheatley, Wilkes County Stockyard, Fareway Building Supply Inc., Burdette Mill & Gin Inc., George Smith, Joe Bennett, William Higginbotham, Fred Greer, George Bennett, and Sam Moore, Silver Membership; Rayle Electric Membership Corp. and Wallace Wheatley, Individual Membership; and AgGeorgia Farm Credit, Diamond Membership.
