Gayle Drinkard Oliver, Jane Hodges and Margaret Hurd of LaGrange represented Troup County schools at the first Phil Mickelson Exxonmobil Teachers Academy in Alexandria, Va.

The three ladies were among the 200 math and science teachers chosen to attend the Academy. The Troup County system was one of the 20 school systems nationwide selected to participate. Other counties in Georgia represented were Richmond and Fulton. Systems were selected based on Exxonmobile plant locations and locations to golf courses where former Masters champion Mickelson is a contender.

They were able to network with teachers from San Diego to Boston, Miami, Dallas, Houston and New Orleans.

The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and Math Solutions in San Diego developed the week-long curriculum. The Academy provided third through fifth grade teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to motivate students to pursue careers in science and math. The goals are to deepen teachers’ understanding of math and science content in areas of data, statistics, measurement, force and motion, build expertise in facilitating student learning through problem solving and inquiry and use links between math and science to support student learning.

Teachers also worked with Dave Pelz, Phil Mickelson’s short game coach, in fine-tuning science lessons the two have been videotaping for teachers to use in science classes.

Mrs. Oliver teaches science to 130 third and fourth graders. She noted that Phil Mickelson and his wife, Amy, are very dedicated to education.
