Grass fire blocks Thomson Highway

Traffic on the Thomson Highway near Aonia was stopped temporarily Saturday afternoon when smoke from a grass fire completely covered the road for a hundred yards or more. Firefighters contained the wind-driven flames to an area of some five acres alongside the highway, and kept the flames from spreading to a nearby home and outbuildings. Wilkes County deputies and a Georgia State Patrol trooper kept traffic moving safely through the smoke until the fire was put out.
