The Reese J. Booker Scholarship Committee awarded $2500 in scholarship certificates to college students during its silver anniversary (25 years) scholarship program on Sunday, December 25, 2005, at the Marks Tabernacle Baptist Church on Lexington Avenue in Washington.

The bonus gift scholarship was awarded to Rev. Cornelius Williams and valued at $1,000. Rev. Williams is the grandson of Mrs. Mattie Julia Williams and is a member of Truelight Church. He attends Athens Tech, pursuing a degree in Nursing.

The students who received scholarships, their church affiliation, their college and field of study are listed below. Each one received $100.

Delois Walton Ferrell, Reeves Chapel, Augusta Tech, Nursing; Henra Chennault, Gibson Grove, University of Georgia, Finance; Frederick Quinn, Trinity, Paine College; Alicia Finnell, Marks Tabernacle, University of Georgia, doctorate in Workforce Education; Reginald Jones, Timothy Baptist, Piedmont Tech, Associate in Funeral Service; Katrina Williams, Atlanta State, Accounting; Petrina Walton Cullars, Mt. Nebo, Nursing; Ashley Hanson, Augusta Tech; Joirorion (J.C.) Walton, Glen A Easley, Nicholas Stokes, Barry (J.R.) Wylie, Nikkita Martin, Christ City of Prayer; Rev. Lance Pitts, Pleasant Grove, Augusta State; and Marie Daniel, Reeves Chapel, Augusta Tech.

Scholarship recipients are asked to go to the registrar’s office of the designated college and ask for a statement or a letter stating that they are currently enrolled in college as of January 2006. This information should be written on the college letterhead, stamped with the college seal, and should have a current date as of January 2006, according to Clara Sutton, chairman of the Reese J. Booker Scholarship Committee.

The date to redeem the certificates or pick up the money is Saturday, January 21, at 10 a.m., at Sutton’s Hair Center, 409-B Lexington Avenue, Washington. If the money is not picked up by January 21, since some colleges are later than others opening, the recipients have another pick up on or before February 18. If the money is not picked up between January 21 and February 18, the money will be returned to the scholarship fund to help other students.

If for some reason the student cannot come to redeem the scholarship certificate, the requested information can be mailed to Clara Sutton, P.O. Box 261, Washington, Ga. 30673. Students should enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope and the check will be mailed to them.

Prior to the presentation of scholarships, Albert Shank led in prayer and music was rendered by Betty Wylie, Samuel Daniel, Mrs. John Tate, Essie Cofer, Reginald Jones, and others.

Encouraging remarks stating how the Reese J. Booker Scholarship has helped them were given by Evangelist Mildred Hawes Hudson, Rev. Lance Pitts, and Evangelist Kimberly W. Dillard. Rev. Cornelius Williams provided music. Donations were recorded by Emma Jones. More than $900 was raised.

Anyone interested in making a donation to the scholarship fund should make checks payable to Reese J. Booker Scholarship, P.O. Box 261, Washington, Ga. 30673.
