Trucker Christopher Chapman, 39, of Columbus, Ga. said he was looking at paperwork in his truck about 3 a.m. Tuesday morning when he hit the sharp curve on the Athens Bypass, below the TPS truckstop. He was unable to stop, he said, and his load shifted, resulting in the truck leaving the road and overturning. The cargo contained sodium nitrate, a hazardous material, so the Athens Highway and the Tignall Highway were both blocked while the cargo was cleaned up and taken away in another truck. The road was closed until after noon Tuesday, and Chapman was cited for failure to maintain a lane.
