Council votes on rate for gym rental, hears proposal for cable franchise

The January meeting of the Tignall City Council was held at the City Hall at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 11, with Mayor Richard Gammon presiding.

All city council members were present. They are Leon Aycock, Charles Bradley, Albert Huyck, Thomas Jackson, and Nobie Keener. Others present were Police Chief Larry Fort; City Clerks Linda Daniel and Jerri Scott; Water-Sewage Maintenance Superintendent Clyde Davis; City Accountant Steve Albertson; and newly-elected City Attorney Michael Horgan. Others present included Rev. Dale Fincher, Ronnie Futch, Jayne Callaway, Tene Berkley, Sonja Morton, Robert Fuller, and Patricia Fuller.

Minutes were read and approved. Michael Horgan was elected city attorney. Rev. Dale Fincher and Ronnie Futch from the Tignall Baptist Church asked for help to determine the church’s property line due to conflicting language in property deeds. City Attorney Horgan was asked to research the question.

Jayne Callaway, representing Wilkes Telephone and Electric Company, distributed a proposed franchise agreement for a cable television system for Tignall.

Council voted that the cost of using the gym will be $8.00 per hour. The council approved the use of the gym by a youth basketball league.

City Accountant Albertson presented a 32-page report. A copy is available at the city hall.

Announcement was made that paying of water bills has improved. City Clerk Scott will work at collecting unpaid city taxes. A committee of Nobie Keener and Albert Huyck was appointed by Mayor Gammon to make suggestions of ways to honor longtime City Attorney Pete Kopecky.

The next regular meeting of the City Council is scheduled for Wednesday, February 8, at the City Hall at 7 p.m. The public is invited.
