Thanks to all who put and have put beautiful flowers in the sanctuary of Phillips Mill Baptist Church over the years. The pretty flowers Sunday, January 15, were placed by Jean Gunter in loving memory of her father, the late Walter Pope McAvoy. Many have fond memories of his family going back to his parents, the late Ab and Lila Williamson McAvoy who were faithful members of Phillips Mill. They would have a car load of grandchildren and neighbors’ children when time for Sunday School came. And Walter Pope’s sweet wife Dorothy, who was the daughter of the late Paul and Pauline Sherrer Poss. Mr. and Mrs. Poss were members of Carters Grove Baptist Church. You were always welcomed in their homes. Coming up this month at Phillips Mill will be our fifth Sunday night singing on January 29 at 6 p.m. Anyone who would like to sing a special, please contact music director Bes Moore. Several children have already volunteered, and a reminder too that on that Sunday morning will be time for our Lord’s Supper following the service. We welcome Adam Standard, son of Bobby and Tesie Stevens Standard, as a new member. He came forward on profession of faith Sunday, January 15, at Phillips Mill. Baptismal service will be Sunday, January 22. May each of us live lives that will be a Christian example for him. The Georgia Baptist Association Executive Committee will meet Tuesday night, January 24, at the Mission Center at 7 p.m. There will be prayer time. The committee is made up of all pastors, all full-time paid ministers and one elected lay member from each church. Also included is the moderator, vice-moderator, associational treasurer and clerk, assistant clerk and assistant treasurer, and the associational council. The WMU Leadership Team of the Georgia Baptist Association met Thursday, January 12, at the Mission Center. Those present included Fran Thaxton, assistant director who has been doing a great job filling in as director since the retirement of Jean Bufford who served a number of years; Jonell Steele, Joan Moncrief, Grace Hunter, Marjorie Bunch, Janet Goldman, Linda Shelton, Kathie Seago, Lauree Shelton, and Priscilla Maxwell. Linda Shelton serves as associational WMU prayer coordinator and Women on Mission consultant. Lauree Shelton is associational liaison. Also present was district consultant Kathie Seago who has accepted the job of mission coordinator project consultant and Camp Daniel Marshall consultant as she lives in that area. Priscilla Maxwell also serves with developmental disabilities ministries consultant. Our WMU Director and Vice-Director will be voted on at our associational Annie Armstrong meeting at County Line Baptist Church in March. Sincere sympathy to the family of Miss Clifford Shank, 99, of Ebenezer Baptist Church in the Georgia Baptist Association, who passed away Saturday, January 7, at Wilkes Health Care Center, Washington. To me she was a sweet Christian lady who touched many lives over the years as a school teacher, active in church and association. She was always the same. I didn’t get to visit her in the nursing home as much as I would have liked to, and was not able to attend her funeral, but I will treasure the memories – like reading her Aonia News column years ago. Sincere sympathy is extended to the family of Mrs. Lola Mae Brady Davis, 82, of Rayle, who passed away Wednesday, January 4. Priscilla Maxwell was among friends of the family who attended graveside services for her at Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery on Friday, January 6. Sincere sympathy is extended to the family of A. Blount Gallaspg of Philomath who passed away Friday, January 6. He was a native of Neshoba County, Mississippi, and a retired Presbyterian minister. Many have fond memories of his wife, the late Claudelle Bryan, who was postmistress at Philomath for some time. Funeral service was held Monday, January 9, at the Philomath Presbyterian Church cemetery. Sincere sympathy is extended to the family of Eugene Parker, 66, of Tignall who passed away Friday, January 6. His sweet wife, the former Daisy Whittington, grew up in the Courtground-Ida Poss community, daughter of the late R.C. and Rosa Lee Sherrer Whittington. Daisy was blessed with two nice husbands. She was first married to the late Billy Hall and they were blessed with two daughters, Pam Hall Barnwell of Houston, Texas, and Marie Hall Messer of Tignall. Mr. Parker was born in Lamar County and had lived in Wilkes County for 36 years. He had retired after working at Standard-CoosaThatcher as maintenance supervisor for 24 years. Funeral services were held at Independence United Methodist Church Cemetery, Tignall, January 6. Priscilla Maxwell was among friends and relatives who attended a wonderful 90th birthday celebration for Grace Mathis (Mrs. Guy) Beazley of the Carters Grove community Saturday afternoon at the Fitzpatrick Hotel in Washington where she enjoyed seeing longtime friends, families of the late, Mr. and Mrs. Al Mathis, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Claude Beazley. I know she could write a very interesting book on growing up, marrying, living with in-laws, faithful to church and community. She has been a wonderful daughter, daughter-in-law, wife, mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Ware of Tignall who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday, January 14, at a nice reception in the fellowship hall of Tignall Baptist Church. Priscilla Maxwell was glad to get in on the last part. Many have fond memories of all the family going back to Donald’s Flynt grandparents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Dock Flynt who lived at one time upstairs over the Busy Bee CafĂ©. She took in sewing and he was over the convicts of Wilkes County. Priscilla also made a pop call with Mrs. Daisy Whittington Hall Parker while in Tignall and got to see the children and recall past memories. Priscilla Maxwell enjoyed visiting over the weekend and recently with friends, Della Maxwell Holdstein, daughter of the late John and Sue Kennedy Maxwell of the Beaverdam Baptist Church; Hazel King Combs, daughter of the late Omer and Fannie Ogletree King; Helen Stevens Lamar, her sister, Virginia Hunter, children of the late Sanders and Mabel Silvey Stevens, all of Phillips Mill Baptist Church. Fond memories are good medicine. Mrs. Gary Edwards enjoyed having her sisters, Geraldine and her husband, Franklin Jones, and Thelma Hargrove, to visit her Saturday afternoon. Among the visitors of Mrs. Mary Nell Taylor Denard recently besides her children who are faithful, have been faithful neighbors, Dolores McAvoy, Margaret Edwards, Priscilla Maxwell, and longtime friend, Susan Combs Aldrich of Milledgeville. Thanks to all who are faithful to drop in to see Dan and Mildred Nunn McAvoy. They are both in hospital beds at home, getting tender loving care. Remember. God loves you.
