Lady Tigers on a roll, beat Warren 60-29; boys still hopeful after disappointing loss
MARCIA WHIMBUSH GOES UP FOR TWO POINTS The Lady Tigers will host Taliaferro and GMC this weekend. The Tiger girls won big in Warren County Tuesday night, 60-29, to remain solidly in second place in region play but the boys “got spanked” by a powerful team of Screaming Devils and dropped to third place behind Warren and Hancock.
The W-W ladies’ win was the third in a row for the Tigers following convincing region victories over Glascock County (55-22) and Lincoln County (58-47) over the weekend as reported by Head Coach Jackson Calhoun.
The game started like a ball game with the two teams neck-and-neck at 18-16. But then the Lady Tigers went on a rampage, outscoring Warren in a run of 42-6 “to put them away,” Calhoun said.
The boys went into the game against Warren hopeful but came out disappointed.
“They are great and they looked like the powerhouse of the region,” Tiger Head Coach Don Keiser said of the Warren County team after Washington-Wilkes fell 44-71. “We couldn’t hit the ocean and they shot great.”
But the coach was not discouraged about his chances of finishing well for the season. In spite of standing at 4-2 in the region and 6-10 overall, Keiser said, “We still have a great shot [at winning the region] if we can beat them at home.” By “them” he means both Warren County and Hancock Central, the No. 1 and No. 2 teams right now.
SCOTT CHECKI LOOKS FOR AN OPENING ON THE INSIDE He led the Tigers with 19 points against Glascock. Even though Warren is at the top of the region (7-0) by virtue of beating Hancock earlier this year, Hancock remains in the top ten at No. 7 statewide as ranked by GaSports.com. The boys were also solid against Glascock and Lincoln over the weekend, posting wins of 74-45 and 70-65, respectively.
The Glascock team, Keiser said, was “a lot better than they have been in the past.” The Tiger effort was led by Scott Checki with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Delveccio Wilburn shot 16 points and Lucious Stewart got 13 while hauling in 14 rebounds. Kelmetrius Wylie, in his first start following his football injury, had 11 points and seven assists.
It was a different story when the Lincoln County Red Devils came to town on Saturday. The Tigers didn’t get a handle on the game until very late but managed to sneak away with the win anyway.
“We were losing at the half by eight (28-36) and had been down by as much as 12,” Keiser said. An 8-0 run right after the half saw the boys get even but it wasn’t until late in the fourth quarter that W-W pulled ahead to win.
“Lincoln played their best game ever,” Keiser said. “Everything they threw up went in.”
Wilburn hit six three-pointers in the contest and led the scoring with a total of 21 points. Stewart notched his second “double-double” of the season with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Checki added 18 points and nine rebounds to the effort and Khiry Tutt pumped in 10 points while grabbing seven boards.
This weekend the teams host Taliaferro County on Friday beginning at 5 p.m. and GMC on Saturday with B-team games starting at 3 p.m. The varsity girls will follow at 6 p.m.
Next Tuesday, the Tigers will travel to Aquinas to try and put the Fighting Irish out of contention.
