Wrestlers’ sportsmanship gets noticed
TO THE EDITOR:
I was looking at a sports website to check on the status of our wrestling team at state duals this weekend when I ran across this post from an anonymous person about our team.
It makes me proud to know that people notice and comment about the sportsmanship of our team at an event like that with literally hundreds of wrestlers there. Out of all the wrestling he had seen in a two day event this was the most memorable moment ... Cool!!
... The rest of Washington [should] know how well we are represented by this group of young men. (See post below)

While it wasn’t a match, during the Social Circle-Washington-Wilkes warm-ups, I witnessed the coolest moment of the weekend...
There were dozens of great memories of the weekend. One of the best was before the Social Circle and Washington-Wilkes match. Both teams were waiting to warm up and Social Circle got on the mat first. The W-W boys waited for a while then just joined the SC warm-up by mirroring their stretches and rolls. It was a sight to see both teams, intermixed, doing exactly the same warm-ups on one mat.
Then when the SC wrestlers went to the middle to meet and pray, the W-W kids just followed them and joined in the meeting. It was a welcome relief of the tension and heat of the “battle” that accompanied most of the weekend. Two or three sections of fans gave both teams a loud ovation as they lined up to compete.
Sometimes we forget these are 14-18-yearold kids who give up their time, energy, and weekends, nights and summers, not for money or fame. They wrestle for the love of the sport. The adults make this sport way too complicated. A sport should be fun and both the Social Circle and Washington Wilkes kids reminded a few hundred fans, YES it is fun...
All the kids who participated this weekend are winners. I hope the teams and players not mentioned in the newspaper remember their weekend not for losing but for the fun this great sport and their hard work has brought them.
(Editor’s note: An official report of the outcome of the state team duals held in Macon has been unavailable up until press time this week. We will attempt to report on that competition in next week’s newspaper. In the meantime, don’t miss the opportunity to see the W-W Tiger wrestling team in action this Friday, January 27, when they host Flowery Branch, Towns County, and ELCA at the WWES gymnasium beginning at 5 p.m. W-WMS wrestlers will also be competing on Friday.)
