Black history will be celebrated during February with a community market day in the historical Reese J. Booker playground and Whitehall Street. There will be vendors, games for children, and cooking of various soul foods. Admission is free. Flint Hill Baptist Church will have a rally on Sunday, February 5, 11:45 a.m., along with the morning service.

An AARP Safe Driving Course will be held in the Conference Room of the First Baptist Church February 13 and 14, from 1 to 5 p.m. Persons interested can reduce their insurance premium by attending this class. Attendance will entitle participants to threeyear reduction in their automobile insurance premium. Cost for the course is $10 per person, payable to AARP. Mt. Carmel Baptist Church will present its annual black history program February 19, 4 p.m. Doris Booker is chairman.

Registration for participating in the Washington-Wilkes Little League Program 2006 is underway and will continue until February 17 at the Ashley Park office on Monday-Friday, 4-6 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. If you have questions, call Tommy Saggus at 706-293-4434.

The Lincoln-Wilkes Retired Educators Association will meet at the Mary Willis Library, 204 East Liberty Street, Thursday, February 9, 11 a.m., with Amethyst Wynn, coordinator for Juvenile Mentoring Program (JUMP), as the speaker. Bring copy of the LWREA Constitution and Bylaws. All members, retired educators, and anyone who plans to retire from the field of education are asked to be present. Membership is granted upon payment of dues to any person who has retired or who plans to retire from the field of education.

Friends of the Mary Willis Library will meet Thursday, February 9, 3 p.m., at the Mary Willis Library.

The Greenes, Southern Gospel recording artists from Boone, N.C., will be at the Lincolnton First Assembly of God on Thursday, February 2, 7 p.m. A love offering will be received and a nursery will be provided. First Assembly is located on the Thomson Highway in Lincolnton.

Wills Memorial Hospital will offer and Lunch and Learn in the Nash Library on February 3 at 12 noon. Dr. Mahesh Duggal will speak on Palliative Medicine (Hospice). Sissy Murray and staff will provide refreshments.

The Early Response Team Training sponsored by the First United Methodist Church will begin Saturday, February 4, 8 a.m., in the fellowship hall of the church. All members of the community regardless of religious affiliation are invited to participate.

Transforming Life Ministries will sponsor a Love Fellowship worship service for Carolyn Cook Binns on Sunday, February 5, 4 p.m., at the Third Shiloh Mission Center. Rev. Roy Andrews will deliver the message. The Cook and Binns families, Rocky Mount Baptist Church, and the Class of 1972 will be special guests.

The Hall Family, a gospel singing group from Crestline, Ohio, will be in concert at Vesta Baptist Church Friday, February 3,

p.m. The church is located on Highway 77 between Elberton and Lexington.

Adrienne Mitchell, a financial aid consultant from the Georgia Student Finance Commission, will conduct a financial aid workshop for high school seniors and their parents at the Lincoln County High School cafeteria on Thursday, February 23, at 6:30 p.m. The workshop is for both Washington-Wilkes and Lincoln County students. Mitchell will help to clarify the financial aid application process, including the completion of FAFSA.

Samaria Temple Church of God In Christ will have its annual Men’s Day program February 19, 3 p.m., with Rev. Matthew Harden of New Tabernacle Baptist Church of Lincolnton as the speaker.

The W-WCHS Class of 2000 five-year reunion will be held March 11, 7 p.m., at the Washington Jockey Club. Tickets may be purchased at a cost of $30 per person or $50 per couple. The regular monthly meeting of the W-W Little League will be held Monday, February 6, 6:30 p.m., at the Ashley Park office. Anyone is invited to attend to continue planning for the opening of the 2006 season and Little League Day in Washington-Wilkes. Volunteers and coaches are still needed. Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Rayle, will celebrate the anniversary of the Junior Choir on Sunday, February 12, at 2:30 p.m. Guest choirs will be the Zion Missionary Youth and Young Adult Choir of Roswell; and Macedonia Voices of Praise of Athens. A fellowship dinner will be served.
