Three area drug dealers have been arrested recently by local law officers, and more arrests are coming, authorities say.

Monday night, Washington Police Cpl. Jamie Bridges conducted a traffic stop on E. Robert Toombs at Franklin Street. During the stop, a back-seat passenger, identified as Scotty Crane, 32, of Washington, jumped out and fled on foot. During the foot chase, Bridges and Lt. Johnny Crookham observed the fleeing passenger throw away a black leather jacket that was found to contain a large amount of cocaine, crack cocaine, and marijuana, packaged for individual sale. The officers also found cash and a set of scales.

Crane was charged with possession of cocaine with intent to sell, possession of marijuana with intent, and obstruction of an officer.

In an arrest on January 14, Lt. Joe Nelson and Cpl. Philiph Perkins, working with information provided to Wilkes Co. deputy Luke Montgomery, conducted a traffic stop on Whitehall Street at Gartrell’s CafĂ©. Carlos Cox, 24, a passenger in the vehicle driven by a juvenile, was searched and was found to have more than $2,500 in cash. Some 149 small baggies of crack cocaine and 19 small bags of powder cocaine were found on the juvenile. Both were charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.

Earlier that week, Collie Will Hurley, 65, was arrested in a joint operation with Wilkes County Sheriff’s investigators, DEA, and GBI investigators. Hurley was arrested on the Lincolnton Road at Smyrna Church Road with “a large amount of cocaine,” Investigator Jimmy Harrison said, and charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. He is held on $100,000 bond. The GBI is investigating further.

Authorities say more arrests are coming. “Put the word out,” Chief Mike Davis said. “We ain’t laying down. We know what they’re doing and we know where they’re doing it. There are more drug dealers that are ‘got’ but we just haven’t picked them up yet.”
