Master potter to talk at W-W Historical Foundation meeting
Master Potter Michael Crocker will be the featured presenter at Sunday’s membership meeting of the Washington-Wilkes Historical Foundation.
The meeting, which is open to the public, is set for 2:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the Robert Toombs House, 216 E. Robert Toombs Avenue.
Michael Crocker, part of the Crocker family of folk potters in Lula, Georgia, has been working at the potter’s wheel since he was 12 years old. He apprenticed to potters in his hometown, which is the center of an area known for more than a century for its traditional pottery.
He set up shop in his own pottery in 1984 has sold his works to collectors and customers from all over the U.S. and from other countries. His pottery has been exhibited in the Smithsonian and at the Library of Congress.
At Gov. Sonny Perdue’s request, he recently exhibited his pottery at the Southern Governors Association meeting at the Ritz Carlton Lodge at Reynolds Plantation.
Crocker is developing the Northeast Georgia Folk Pottery Museum in Sautee-Nacoochee, which will open later this year.
