The attendance at the funeral of Mrs. Frances Duke showed the evidence of the outpouring of love for her from former students, Delta Kappa Gamma teacher sorority sisters, friends, and relatives.

Mrs. Duke taught high school English at Tignall High School and in Washington when the schools consolidated. She was devoted to her church and her pastor, Dale Fincher. Even though she never had children of her own, her students were the source of her endless delight and pride.

She shared stories about her students. One story that was remembered by many, was of the time she had a student who always said “I have went.” She left him with instructions to write “I have gone” 100 times on the chalkboard while she attended a teachers meeting. When she returned she found a note from this young man, “I wrote I have gone 100 times, now I have went home.”

Last year when she was brutally attacked in her own home she displayed bravery any man or woman would envy.

“Mrs. Duke, thank you for your great teaching. My participles will never dangle and I will never end a sentence with a preposition.”

Out-of-town relatives attending the funeral of Mrs. Duke were the following: nephew and wife, Mr. and Mrs. John LeRoy from Cumming; niece and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Martello of Coral Gables, Fla.; niece and husband, Mr. and Mrs. John Creel of Chattanooga, Tenn.; brother-in-law, Jack Anderson of Chattanooga, Tenn.; nephew, Robert Ellis LeRoy Jr. of Pennsylvania; sister-in-law, Mrs. Jack LeRoy of Cumming.
