DELVECCIO WILBURN GOES UP IN HEAVY TRAFFIC He made the shot and led the scoring against Hancock last week. The Washington-Wilkes Tigers were hoping for an upset win over Hancock and a subsequent move into third place in Region 7-A last Friday night – but it didn’t happen.

After jumping ahead to a comfortable lead early on, the boys went into the dressing room at the half with a 10-point lead but ended up with a 12-point deficit after the second half.

“We just ran out of gas,” Head Coach Don Keiser said, “and we don’t have much of a bench.”

But the Tigers bounced back on Saturday and Tuesday with big road victories over GMC (68-48) and Glascock (61-33). And now, with two games left in the regular season, there is still a slight possibility that the Tigers can go into the region tournament with a third place seed rather than fourth.

If W-W wins the last two games over Lincoln County on Friday and Warren County on Saturday – two games that they should win – and if Aquinas loses to No. 1 Hancock, then the No. 3 spot will be determined by a coin toss between W-W and Aquinas. Whatever the outcome, it looks like the probabilities are for a first-round match-up on Wednesday, February 8, with either Lincoln County or GMC.

But strange things have been happening in the region. Last week, Aquinas beat the previously unbeaten Warren 68-57 and then turned around an could only beat the winless Taliaferro by two points. Taliaferro claimed its first win of the year over Lincoln County and then it took Lincoln four overtimes to beat the hapless Glascock. Conversely, Lincoln was then only seven points shy of beating Aquinas at Aqninas. Who knows what the last two game dates are going to see?

Four Tigers hit double figures last Friday against Hancock. Delveccio Wilburn led the way with 14, followed by Kelmetrius Wylie and Scott Checki with 13 each. Lucious Stewart had 11 and also an even dozen rebounds.

The next night it was Stewart who led the charge with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Wylie was next with 13 points while Wilburn shot 11 and Checki hit 10. On Tuesday against Glascock, Wilburn hit 15 points and everybody on the whole team scored. None of the starters played in the second half.
