Lady Tigers clinch second with two weekend victories
SHANEESIA WILLIAMS GETS AROUND THE CORNER The W-W girls have two regular season games left for 2006. Two big wins have propelled the Washington-Wilkes Lady Tiger basketball team into second place in Region 7-A with no chance of being knocked out. After falling to an incredibly strong Hancock Central team last Friday night, the girls thoroughly trounced GMC in Milledgeville on Saturday and then wore out Glascock on Tuesday.
With second place clinched, the ladies are hoping to host a game in the first round of the state playoffs which begin next week. But before that, they will go on the road to Lincoln County this Friday before hosting Warren County on Saturday night for the last game of the regular season.
“All of the Lady Tigers that played made positive contributions to the team victory [at Glascock],” said Head Coach Jackson Calhoun. “We continued to have tremendous on-court leadership by our ‘Big 3’ of Mawanua Ware, Jaleesa Hampton, and Diundra Doughty.”
The Lady Tigers started off a little flat and managed only a 2-point edge at the end of the first quarter. But then, “we woke up,” Calhoun said, “and it was 29-9 at the half.” The B-team played the fourth quarter and outscored Glascock 10-9.
“It was truly a decisive victory,” Calhoun added.
