Prison hiring brings full house

Dozens of hopefuls from all over Wilkes County and surrounding areas prepare to take a pre-employment test Tuesday morning for some 48 job openings announced recently for the new Wilkes Pre-release Center south of Washington. Whitworth Probation Center personnel officer Ted Hilley said that more than 80 applicants arrived for the 9 a.m. testing, and some had to be asked to return for the 1 p.m. testing due to space limitations at the Edward B. Pope Center. Hilley said that those who are hired will go for training starting April 1.
