English teachers set seminar for parents

2006-03-09 / News

In an effort to help students succeed in English classes and give parents an opportunity to see what their children are working on in their English classes, the English department at Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School extends an invitation to all parents of students currently taking English to take part in a seminar on March 16 from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m.

The seminar will address issues concerning student achievement in language arts classes, including senior projects, portfolios, revisions, the writing process, and characteristics of effective writing.

A spokesman for the English department says that the English teachers believe that all students are capable of achieving success in their language arts classes, yet they see a disparity between the ability and potential they see in each student and the level of performance many students achieve.

Parents who have questions or are concerned about their child's performance in English classes are encouraged to attend the seminar. As an incentive for parents' attendance, teachers will be offering five bonus points to be applied, at the teachers' discretion, to revisions, portfolios, tests, or research papers.

The seminar will begin in the cafeteria at 5:30 for refreshments. Parent teacher meetings will be held in rooms 201, 202, 207, and 214.
