Is your horse ready for spring? Your horse should be vaccinated for Eastern and Western Encephalomyelitis, and West Nile virus no later than May. It is very important that these vaccines be administered before the start of the mosquito season. Your horse should also receive a Tetanus vaccine at least once per year. Influenza and Rhinopneumonitis vaccines should be given every six months or sooner depending on your horse's situation. Brood mares should receive Rhinopneumonitis during the 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th month of pregnancy. Be sure only killed vaccines are used on pregnant mares. Deworming your horse should be performed also. Did you know that rotational deworming may not be best for your horse? Dentals should be performed on your horse two times per year. A solid health plan will help ensure your horse enjoys a healthy summer. Ask your veterinarian to create a health plan custom tailored for your horse.
