Tignall News
Layton and Gloria Harris have just returned from a month-long camping trip at The Oaks Campground in Bushnell, Fla., south of Ocala. The camping group included friends, Thomas and Gladys Roth, Sam and Florence Bradley, James and Martha Echols, Thomas Chambers (now living in Warren County), Bill and Dot McCord, and Bobby and Bonnie Land from Thomson. This was a month full of relaxation, laughing, shopping, fishing (no serious fishing, since there was only one fish caught), eating, attending the state fair in Tampa, and just having a great time together. They visited friends, Bob and Terri White from Port Orange, Fla. The group also attended area churches while there. Carolyn Gammon has a pet peeve and that is the way people are parking at the Tignall Post Office. Some people park and some people just land. They may land at the post office door with car still running and car door hanging open, or they may land in the driveway blocking the entrance for other cars, or they land in the handicap parking area with no handicap tag. It would be good to see everyone obeying the laws of parking at the post office and understand this is a place for all people not just a few who continue to break the law. It's not hard to follow the rules and show a little respect to others. Pam Pullen is at home now recuperating from back surgery. We wish her a speedy recovery. The community extends sympathy to the family of Edwina Hardy. She is survived by sons, Henry Brown of Tignall and Johnny Evans of Montgomery, Alabama. Sympathy is also extended to the family of Billy Dawson. He was the grandfather of Miles Dawson and brother-in-law of Daisy Parker, both of Tignall. Tignall Baptist Church is hosting an evangelism conference for the Georgia Baptist Association on March 16 at 6:30 p.m. Dr. Nelson Price will be at this conference and professional football player, Russ Tanner, will give his testimony. There will also be special music. Everyone is invited and a nursery will be provided. We need to remember Lois Savage in our prayers as she will be having surgery next week. Members and visitors of the Wilkes County Baptist Church enjoyed Family and Friends Day Sunday, March 5, where lunch was served after the service. Pastor William Jackson delivered the message. Mrs. Hugh Keener and Mrs. Dave Barney were in Thomson Wednesday visiting Mr. and Mrs. William Wansley and daughter Elizabeth. They all had lunch at the 1810 Inn. Dan Foxx is busy restoring the Simmons/Sheppard house in Tignall. He has replaced the roof on the front porch and is working on other portions of the porch. It is such a pleasure to see the older homes rescued and our town cleaning up some areas. While picking up an article for The News-Reporter from Joan Baker, attention was brought to an interesting group of ladies. It seems that there is a Ladies Coffee Club which meets every Monday morning at the Kum Back Caf. All of the ladies live in the Tignall area. The group consists of the following: Joan Baker, Dr. Sophia B. Bamford, Margie Bunch, Edna Lamar, and Mildred Tyler. The conversation was quite interesting, everyone was chipper, and our cups were kept full. Mrs. Sarah Bamford Pelot, daughter of Dr. Sophia B. Bamford, visited for a few weeks a while back. People are still calling or writing about the precious picture of our Mrs. Duke dancing the jitterbug. Everyone makes the same comment, "I hope she saw that article about her birthday and the picture of her dancing." Unfortunately, that was not the case. I know we have all heard of the "Adopt-A-Highway Program." Well, Tignall, we need to adopt the highway between Washington and Tignall. You would think there are no trash cans in our town. The dumpsters in this county are eyesore enough without the roadways covered with trash too! With our county once again hosting the Historic Washington-Wilkes spring Tour of Homes March 31-April 2, we really need to start working on not throwing our trash out the car window! The county usually does a clean-up job before the tour and this would be a good starting point for everyone to be more thoughtful before tossing! Where is our civic pride? The poor little daffodils are trying their best to provide some glimmer of beauty, let's do our best to help! Jordan Tyler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Greg Tyler and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Tyler, competed in the state wrestling tournament in Lilburn Saturday, February 25. Jordan finished the tournament with a 4-1 record, and his only loss was in a 2-0 decision in overtime. He won the bronze medal and is proclaimed third in the state. Carolyn Gammon attended an Alpha Theta Retreat at Hickory Knob State Park in McCormick, S.C., Friday and Saturday. Twelve teachers and retired teachers got together for a weekend of games, music, laughter, and lots of fun. The theme for this year was "Metaphor of the Table." Wow, what stories come from the table! Congratulations to Mindi Burton on being awarded the Young Farmers $500 scholarship. Mindi was awarded this scholarship at the Young Farmers annual Family Night dinner Tuesday, February 28. Her application was not judged by Wilkes County so she and her family were completely surprised. Mindi is the daughter of Joe and Debbie Burton. Everyone is very proud of you, Mindi.
