Mrs. Martha Carlyon Wells was honored on the occasion of her 90th birthday at a reception Sunday afternoon, March 5, given by her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Wells, and their family, Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Wells of Washington and Mr. and Mrs. Kerry Herndon and Drew of Athens, in the Mary Callaway Burton Fellowship Hall of First Baptist Church. Mrs. Wells' birthday was March 2.

Mrs. Wells chose for the occasion a chestnut pants ensemble accented with a yellow shell. She was presented a corsage of white rosebuds.

As guests arrived, they signed the guest register at a table overlaid with a white Army-Navy cloth and decorated with a crystal budvase of pink sweetheart roses, springeri and greenery.

A grouping of white wicker provided seating for Mrs. Wells to greet her guests. The white wicker table was centered with a beautiful spring bouquet in shades of pink, sent by Mrs. Jack Leard and daughter, Mrs. Martin Burgess, and provided an area for guests to place birthday cards and wishes for the guest of honor. Centering the fellowship hall was a grouping of round tables skirted in white and topped with shades of pink puddling. The slightly raised center round table held a silver epergne of candles and varieties of purple chrysanthemums, hot pink gerbers, pink carnations, yellow lilies, bells of Ireland, springeri and leatherleaf.

One end of the table featured the tiered birthday cake topped with yellow rosebuds. The cake was a gift from Mrs. Mabel Fouche and Kermit Hocutt and made by Mr. Hocutt. Served with the cake were toasted pecans, cheese straws, and punch.

Also assisting the hosts were Mrs. Rosemary Hopkins and Mrs. Richard Nelms of Washington.

More than 100 guests attended during the afternoon. Out-of-town guests included Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Wells, Kyle and Carter, of Campobello, S.C., Mrs. Neal Amason of Lincolnton, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Cliatt and Benjamin F. Cliatt of Columbia, S.C., Mrs. Jean Wells of Tignall, Beth Lannae and Russell Rainey of Evans, Mrs. Herb Cole of LaFayette, Susan Amason, Billy Amason and Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Boatwright of Rayle, and Mrs. Sally Bolen of Williston, S.C.
