KEVIN STASYSHYN (left) PITCHES and CLINT ECHOLS GETS A HIT The Tigers hosted Thomson yesterday and will travel to Oglethorpe on March 15. The Washington-Wilkes Tiger baseball team got clobbered in two out of three games this week but an impressive comeback in the final two innings on Tuesday evened the team's season record at 2-2.

The comeback came after the Tigers had been down 3-8 against Jefferson County on March 7 but a five-run sixth tied the score at 8-8 and reliever Clete Wilson kept Jefferson at bay through the top of the seventh. After Demont Gresham made his way to first base in the bottom of the last, Wilson smacked an rbi double to win the game 9-8.

Kevin Stasyshyn started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched three innings. Wilson came on in relief and recorded nine strikeouts allowing while only one unearned run slipped by.

Last Wednesday, March 1, the Tigers hosted the Oglethorpe County Patriots and the news wasn't so good. Stasyshyn and Wilson combined on the mound for W-W but a strong AA Oglethorpe team proved to be too much on that day. Highlight of the game was Jonathon Nicholson's 2-for-3 hitting including a three-run homer pulling the Tigers within three at 4-7.

But Oglethorpe punched two more runs across the plate in the seventh and took the win at 4-9.

The news was even worse two days later at North Oconee. While Gresham continued with a second convincing performance on the mound, he got little support from his defense or his offense. Gresham three for six innings and fanned nine batters allowing only three hits. But the Tiger defense committed three errors allowing four unearned runs to score. The W-W offense was also weak and managed only two hits in the game. The final score was 1-5.

The Tigers hosted the Thomson Bulldogs on Wednesday, March 8, but the game was unresolved as of press time for this issue. The next game for W-W will be a rematch with the Patriots at their place on Wednesday, March 15 beginning at 4:30 p.m.

In the meantime, the W-W Tiger B-team has two scheduled home games during the coming week. On Friday, March 10, the young Tigers will host the GMC Bulldogs in a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. Then, on Tuesday, March 14, the Thomson B-team comes to town for a game also beginning at 5 p.m.

The Middle School Tigers will be on the road to Lincoln County on Friday. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
