Confederate submarine Hunley subject of Round Table meeting
The Hunley, the world's first submarine representing a feat not repeated for another 50 years, will be the subject of speaker Jack E. Marlar at the Monday, March 27, meeting of the Civil War Round Table of Washington. The dinner meeting will be held at Watchmaker's Restaurant in The Fitzpatrick Hotel in downtown Washington beginning at 6 p.m. with dinner for $10 per person. The program will follow.
Marlar, the first field representative for the Sons of Confederate Veterans, is a life-long resident of South Carolina. He was a production supervisor for the last 11 years, purchasing agent for a machine manufacturer for the previous 16 years, and has been an instructor for Piedmont Tech. Founder of the Palmetto Light Artillery re-enactors, Marlar also serves as technical advisor to the Hunley Commission and has received the national Robert E. Lee Gold Award. He has worked extensively with the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology building tooling to disarm and restore the four Confederate Artillery pieces found in Chester, S.C.
Marlar has built numerous WBTS artillery cannon and carriages, including a full scale 12-lb. Confederate Coehorn Mortar. He is past S.C. Div. judge advocate general and past brigade commander, as well as past commander of the 16th regiment, S.C. Volunteers Camp in Greenville, S.C.
