In conjunction with the annual Festival of Music and Art next month, students in Wilkes County schools from kindergarten through the eighth grade will take part in an art contest focusing on Washington's past, present, and future.

The works will be judged in three divisions, teacher Erin Frost said, W-WPS (K-3), W-WES (4-5) and W-WMS (6-8). There will be prizes awarded for first, second, and third places in each category.

The work must all be done by the student, she said, and must be on a half-sheet of poster board, no more. "Students may uses a variety of supplies such as glitter, pastels, charcoal, markers, crayons, colored pencils, photographs, and much more."

Only photographs taken by the student are allowed to be used.

The artwork must be in good taste and visually pleasing and artistic, and must reflect the theme, "Washington: Past, Present, and Future."

Artwork should have the student's full name on the back, along with the child's homeroom teacher, school, and grade.

Posters must be turned in to homeroom teachers by Tuesday, April 25, and winners will be announced Friday, April 28.
