Champion turkey caller Jeff Murphy added another trophy to his collection this month when he won the friction championship at the South Carolina State Turkey Calling competition in Edgefield.

Murphy's score of 217 eclipsed all others at the event which was held at the National Wild Turkey Federation headquarters. He was competing as a Custom Camo Gold Pro staff member.

Skeet Thomas of Legacy Game Calls took second place with a score of 207 and Justin Savage of Roberts Brothers was third at 200. Savage had won the Grand Nationals friction event earlier this year.

"Justin and I are great friends," Murphy said, "and I helped him with his calling when he started. To see him win the Grand National was great and I am happy for him."

Murphy said that Savage's Grand National Championship now presents a challenge to him. "When I won [in S.C.], I told him that I was coming for him because he has something I want - the Grand National Friction Championship," he said.

Murphy explained that he had not qualified to call in friction this year but winning the S.C. championship qualifies him for next year. "So I'm on a mission to win the Grand National Friction Championship in 2007," he said.

"For right now, my competing is over until I call at the World Championship in Alabama in July.

"But this week," he said, "on the 25th of March, the real judges will come to town. That's opening day for turkey season.
