Students at Washington-Wilkes Elementary School are joining in the fight against cancer by raising money and walking behind the school on Thursday, March 30, beginning at 8:15 a.m.

Students are holding a "Mini-Relay," which is an abbreviated version of the American Cancer Society's national signature activity, Relay for Life. They have been collecting donations throughout the month of March and will walk the track for one class period as designated by their teachers.

"It's a great opportunity for the students to make an impact in the community as well as become knowledgeable about cancer," says Jillian Wells, W-WES Pre-Kindergarten teacher and the Mini-Relay coordinator. "The students feel good about themselves knowing they are doing something to help others."

The Mini-Relay will be an all-day event complete with music from Heartfelt Productions. All money raised will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

Relay for Life will take place during the month of May in Washington and is estimated to raise $35,000 for the American Cancer Society's mission of saving lives from cancer. The money raised by the W-WES students will be donated to Relay for Life in the name of the school.
