To get to this point in his career, Lt. (jg) Johnson previously completed Naval ROTC training at Georgia Tech in Atlanta where he was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy. He graduated from Georgia Tech in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in Management.

The winging festivities began on Thursday afternoon, March 23, with the Soft Patch Ceremony. At this time the students and instructors participate in a ceremony of ripping off their name patches from their uniforms and having them replaced with the Naval Aviator wings. A reception followed the ceremony where all enjoyed a time of toasts, many serious and others lighthearted, and a time of celebration of accomplishments.
