In baseball action for the Washington Wilkes Tigers during the past week and a half, the team beat McCormick, S.C., lost to Aquinas, and avenged an earlier loss by beating North Oconee last Saturday at Tiger Field. There was no report of a scheduled March 22 game against Harlem.

On Friday, March 17, W-W travelled across the river to take on the McCormick Chiefs and came back with a no-contest win. Mark Tench went the distance for the Tigers, pitching a complete game which ended after five innings due to the "Mercy Rule." Tench allowed only three hits and struck out nine in the game.

Tench also led the offense with his 3-for-4 performance at the plate. Other Tigers gathering hits were Caleb Saggus, 2-for-4; Clete Wilson, 2-for-4; Demont Gresham, 2for-4 with a home run; Thorne Brown, 2-for-4; Kevin Stasyshyn, 2for-4; Blake Davis, 2-for-3; and D.J. Willis, 1-for-3.

On Monday, the Tigers returned home to host a top-ten-ranked Aquinas teams. Although Gresham pitched a complete game and gave up only five hits, the Irish went home with the 9-7 win anyway.

Gresham struck out 12 batters but control problems in the third inning allowed the Irish to score five runs on just two hits and five walks.

The Tigers battled back to tie the game at 7-7 at the end of five. But in the sixth, a two-out double with runners on second and third scored them both to seal the game at 9-7 for Aquinas.

On Saturday, March 25, also at home, the Tigers stayed tough to hang on and beat North Oconee by a score of 10-8.

Wilson pitched five strong innings recording 10 strikeouts and picking up the win. Gresham came on in relief and recorded his first save of the season.

Offensively, Gresham and Davis led the way with a home run each, accounting for five runs. Collecting hits in the game were Wilson, 2-for4; Gresham, , 2-for-3; and Davis, 2for-3.

This Friday, March 31, the Tigers will travel to Lincolnton for a region game against the Red Devils. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
