Little League Day success; season will begin April 10

The weather was perfect and the teams could hardly contain themselves as the 2006 WashingtonWilkes Little League season got started with its annual parade and celebration last Saturday.

Dr. Lester Johnston of Washington, a "real" baseball player, was grand marshal for the parade and led the way in a bright red Mini Cooper. Following were all the teams, high spirited and throwing candy to hundreds of onlookers throughout the parade route.

A number of activities followed at Ashley Park including the introduction of teams and the home run derby. Winners in the home run derby for the boys were Will Lawson, first place; Devvin Ferris, second; and Kenneth Gunter, third. For the girls, Abby Smith took first place; Samantha Smith, second; and Bailey Echols, third. Trophies were presented to each of the winners.

The grand prize raffle ticket won a night at the Fitzpatrick Hotel and there were over 40 other prizes given in the raffle. Tickets were sold by the teams and prizes were donated by local businesses.

Opening week for official games gets underway on Monday, April 10 with different leagues playing nightly. Until then, "Our main job will be keeping the fields in good shape and ready for each game," according to Sissy Murray. "We can always use assistance in this area - DAILY!" she said.
