A music workshop for students will be held on The Square in Downtown Washington on Saturday, April 29, from 2 until 3:30 p.m.

The workshop is sponsored by the Washington-Wilkes Arts Foundation and the Washington Jockey Club as a community service.

ARGO, a performance unit from the University of West Florida featuring the most musically accomplished members of the faculty and student body, will conduct the free workshop. Included will be the history of the instruments and demonstrations of various techniques for creating different sounds for a variety of music styles.

ARGO is a 10-piece band featuring the punch of four horns, a full rhythm section, plus the most talented singers in the area. Equally at home with Big Band Swing, Motown, R&B, Classic Rock, Disco, or Modern Pop and dance music, ARGO has been thrilling audiences all over the Southeast with its musicality and versatility. The mandate of the band is to provide performers with the opportunity to work in a variety of musical styles which has enabled them to develop a vast repertoire touching on all popular music from the past century.

"We're planning to be outside on The Square so we can really handle almost any number of students," says Dave Shelander, ARGO band leader. "Even if we have to go inside because of rain (upstairs at the Jockey Club) there will be enough space for a large group. "We are going to concentrate on the saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone, euphonium, and basic drum techniques. We won't be able to do combo instruments, such as piano or guitar or bass. Students need to bring their instruments."

The workshop should be an exciting interactive, educational, and informative festival event intended to encourage children and youth to pursue or continue their music education, according to a spokesman for the Arts Foundation.

Each student who attends will receive a certificate of participation from the Foundation.
