Tyrone News
Thanks to all who took part in any way to help make our Spring Tour of Homes in Washington-Wilkes a wonderful success again this year. A lot went on all weekend. News travels. I received a note last week from one of my first cousins, Gerald Lyle "Jerry" West, who lives in Surprise, Arizona, near Phoenix. The Arizona Republic, their main newspaper, carried an article giving the Top Ten Bed and Breakfast and Country Inns for 2006, from American Historic Inns Inc. Washington Plantation Bed and Breakfast in Washington-Wilkes was listed number 10. Others were from Northern states across the United States, such as New Hope, Penn.; Spring Lake, N.J.; Des Moines, Iowa; Santa Ynezo, Calif.; Chestertown, Maryland; Bellaire, Michigan; Vail, Colorado; and Adobe Grand Villas, Sedona. Washington Plantation is known to many as the former Ray House where many wedding receptions have been held in years past. We congratulate the owners of Washington Plantation. Happy birthday to Rachel Callaway Johnson and Evelyn Hunter Cofer, Friday, April 7; and to Helen Stevens Lamar, Sunday April 9. All of these ladies are a part of Phillips Mill Baptist Church. Phillips Mill Baptist Church plans to have the annual Sunrise service and breakfast on Easter Sunday at 8:30 a.m., followed by Sunday School at 10:00 and morning worship at 11:00 a.m. The choir will be presenting a cantata at the beginning of the service. Many sunrise services will be held much earlier, I'm sure. This seems to work best for us. Phillips Mill will have no evening service on Easter Sunday. Phillips Mill Baptist Church was happy to have three visitors Sunday morning who are related to the Mercers. Thomas King Daniel and his sister, Bebe Wells, of Winder and their sister, Elaine Potts of Nichelson, visited. During the morning service, two of our older deacons were presented nice framed certificates of appreciation for longtime service at Phillips Mill Baptist Church. Irvin Swann and Morrison Lee Maxwell Jr. both are past 75 years old. Both have been blessed to have been married to their only wife more than 50 years. Irvin and Flora Grimes were married in December 1954 and Morrison and Priscilla Johnson were married in August 1955. They both appreciate this honor from the church. We welcome new members, Mrs. Hazel Parker, and Paul and Norma Swift Davidson, as new members. Mr. Paul celebrates his 97th birthday this week. Mildred Nunn McAvoy spent last week in Wills Memorial Hospital with a bad blood clot in the leg where the hip was broken recently. She is home and doing as well as she can. Mr. Dan still is not doing well. They appreciated those visiting during the week and weekend, including Mr. and Mrs. Warren Nunn, Gloria Hardy, Billy McAvoy, Mr. and Mrs. Donnie McAvoy, Dorothy Ann Saxon, Faye McAvoy, Priscilla Maxwell, and Pastor Robert Rayner is faithful to drop in. Margaret Edwards enjoyed having their son Clinton of Augusta and her sister Geraldine and her husband, Franklin Jones, to spend a day last week with her. They met at the Home Caf in Washington for lunch, visited Gary's grave, and enjoyed the afternoon together at home on Sandy Cross Road. Priscilla Maxwell joined her daughter, Mary Jane Scarborough, and Tyler Saturday for a nice visit with Tyler's great-grandparents, Lee and Betty Sloan in Alto. Their son, Eddie Sloan, and his family of Crawford, and son, Gerald, were also visiting them. Remember! God loves you.
