Drag races, graduations, Mayfest bring heavy traffic, enforcement
A weekend full of activities that packed northeast Georgia roads brought Georgia State Patrol troopers out in force to set up license and DUI checkpoints in Wilkes and surrounding counties Saturday afternoon.
The NHRA drag racing Nationals in Commerce, several college graduation ceremonies, and the Mayfest celebration in Washington all combined to bring traffic to record levels along the Highway 78 corridor, and Highways 17 and 44, GSP Washington assistant post commander Corporal Paul Waller said. The road checks were set up on Highway 44 west of Washington, on Highway 78 in Oglethorpe County, and on Highway 17 in Elbert County.
Some 28 GSP troopers, along with 60 county deputies and other law enforcement officers, stopped all traffic going through the checkpoints and looked for safety violations and intoxicated drivers.
The troopers and deputies made four felony drug arrests, 13 DUI arrests, 10 misdemeanor drug arrests, 14 arrests for driving with an open container of alcohol, and two arrests for possession of a firearm by a felon. There were more than 40 license violations found, ranging from no license to driving with the wrong class license.
The total of arrests, including tickets, was 122.
