Wilkes Co. students 'outstanding' in Ga. high school graduation test
W-WCHS juniors (now seniors) who made perfect scores on parts of the graduation tests are (front, l-r) Maggie Cravens, Molly Newsome, Elizabeth Duggan, Jessica Watson, (back) Wright Gunter, Charlton Ware, and Brantley Stevens. Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School recently received the results of the Georgia High School Graduation Tests (GHSGT) that were administered across the state during March and according to assistant principal Steve Echols, "Our Class of 2007 did an outstanding job on these tests." In fact, seven W-WCHS juniors made perfect scores on at least one portion of the tests this year.
High school juniors take tests in the academic areas of math, science, social studies, and English/language arts. They also take a writing test that is given in the fall. In order to graduate, students must pass all parts of the GHSGT (have a scaled score of 500 or higher), as well as meet all course requirements for graduation.
The average scaled scores for WWCHS students were above the average for all other schools in our Regional Educational Service Area (RESA), as well as being at or above the average for other schools in the State of Georgia. See the accompanying chart for a comparison of the scaled scores for W-WCHS students in the four areas compared to the average for other schools in our RESA and the State.
Probably more important, according to Echols, is the percentage of W-WCHS students who passed the different parts of the GHSGT on their first attempt (see chart).
Seven W-WCHS juniors made perfect scores (600) on some part of the GHSGT. Three students had perfect scores in Math, including Maggie Cravens, Elizabeth Duggan, and Brantley Stevens. Four students made perfect scores on the English/ in Ga. high language arts part of the test including Wright Gunter, Molly Newsome, Charlton Ware, and Jessica Watson. Echols offered the school's congratulations to all W-WCHS juniors who passed the GHSGT on their first attempt.
Those students who did not pass a specific content area test will have four more attempts at it before graduation. The faculty at W-WCHS offers remediation workshops for those students before each of the retake opportunities. The first of those remediation sessions will be held this summer beginning on July 5 on the W-WCHS campus. Administration of the retakes for the GHSGT begin with the writing test on July 12 followed by science on July 17, math on July 18, social studies on July 19, and English/language arts on July 20.
