Phillips Mill Baptist Church was happy to have Rev. Lem Clark, Executive Director of Penfield Christian Home, to preach Sunday morning and evening. Sunday night those attending also enjoyed hearing the choir including more than 50 men who are at present taking advantage of getting help with drug and alcohol problems. One of the favorite hymns at Penfield Home is "Victory In Jesus." Monday morning, a nice group of excited children and helpers showed up at Phillips Mill for Vacation Bible School directed again this year by Charlotte Waller. This year the children will present a program for parents and friends on Friday night, June 9, at 6:30 p.m. After commencement, those attending are invited to stay and enjoy sandwiches and chips together after the service. Phillips Mill Baptist church is in the process of raising money for stained glass windows for the church. More money is needed. If you are interested in having a part in this nice project, you may contact the committee for more details. They include John Howard, Dean McDonald, and Brent Sherrer, who have put a lot of work into this. Bob and Betty Anne West spent a few days with Bob's cousin, Julian Johnson, and his wife Nancy in Jonas Ridge, N.C. While there Bob and Julian enjoyed sitting on their nice long front porch for hours overlooking the mountains, as they talked about family, friends and old times. One day they all enjoyed a trip to Elizabethton, Tenn., antique shopping. Another day the ladies went to Blowing Rock, N.C., to the outlet mall while the men visited friends. They enjoyed the cool weather along with their visit. Bob's dad, the late Jordan West, and Julian's dad, the late Ernest Johnson, both grew up at Phillips Mill. So did Julian. Bob grew up in Detroit, Mich., where Jordan went after school to work, along with others from our area. After Jordan retired all the family came back home where he had bought up land to enjoy in retirement. Ernest and his wife, the late Lucy Chafin Johnson, owned and operated a country store in the Lynesville community back when you could buy gas for less than one dollar perhaps. Less than that. The store building still stands near where Irin and Flora Swann's home is in Taliaferro County. The community was named for a Lynes family that o nce lived there and are buried in the Bethesda Baptist Church Cemetery. Back in the early 1950s while in high school in Crawfordville I (Priscilla) wrote the Lynesville news for several years. Mr. and Mrs. Dan McAvoy and Jerry McAvoy continue to appreciate family, friends, and other relatives loving concern and prayers. Among recent visitors have been David and June Harris, Tom Hardy, Billy Swann, Dorothy Ann Saxon, Donnie and Claudia McAvoy, their daughter Tammy and her husband, Glenn Gabriel, and sons, Daniel and Mitchell. The Gabriels live in Greenwood, S.C. Dan and Mildred Nunn McAvoy will be married 63 years on Monday, June 19. Priscilla Maxwell continues to get pretty cards and sweet notes from friends. I have gone past 75 since my fall on Monday morning, April 24. People have been very thoughtful in many ways which is greatly appreciated. Among visitors the past few weeks have been Lois Hoffman Jones Poss, Margaret Edwards, Bes Moore, Angie Roth, Rev. James Bland, James and Samille Huff Branham Sherrer, and a carload of leaders from Phillips Mill surprised me one night while in the hospital including Mary Jane McAvoy, Sherrie McAvoy, Carolyn Burnam, Henrietta Lunceford, and Joyce West. Visiting me at our daughter's home have been Bob and Betty Anne who also visited me in the hospital, Shirley Dunn, Faye McAvoy, Charlotte Waller, Marvin and Oleta McAvoy, Barbara Wolters, Jerry McAvoy, Helen Lamar, and Virginia Hunter, Betty Thornton and Leonora Lunsford. Many phone calls. I ventured out to Sunday School and morning worship Sunday and a baby shower that afternoon. We want to wish all having birthdays and anniversaries coming up a happy birthday or anniversary. A special happy birthday this week, June 8, to Lauree Shelton who works at our Georgia Baptist Mission Center in Washington. She is such a dedicated and faithful Christian and who loves the Lord and serving him through missions. She is very helpful in many ways to all people who seek her help in the Association. Coming up this August, Lauree will have served the Association for 20 years. Thanks Lauree. May God continue to bless you with a caring and loving spirit and good health. Remember, God loves you.
