Washington Lions Club installs 12 new officers
Coke Geddings (center, with gavel) installed the officers for the Washington Lions Club Monday night at a special meeting of the club. Officers are (left to right) Smythe Newsome, Robert Wright, Grady Rogers, Willard Lance, (Geddings), Jerry Stover, Mary Hubbard, Robbie Drake, Lisa Drake, Shari Bryson, and Buzzy Randall. The Washington Lions Club was host to a record-setting ceremony Monday evening, June 26, when 12 members were installed as officers for the coming club year.
Lion President Mary W. Hubbard accepted appointment to her seventh term as head of the local club. Lions International is one of the world's largest civic organizations, and is best known for its work in the field of sight conservation. Since the Washington Lions Club was chartered June 17, 1940, several former presidents have served endorsement terms, but it is believed that none has served for more than three terms.
In accepting the office, Hubbard expressed appreciation to her fellow
Lions and to other individuals and organizations throughout the community for their faithful and generous support of the club and its programs. She pledged her best effort as president and called on all the members to work hard for outstanding achievement in the coming year.
Special guests included Mr. and Mrs. Coke Geddings of Martinez. Lion Geddings is a longtime member of National Hills Lions Club of Augusta, which he has served as president and in several other offices. He is a past district governor and a Melvin Jones Fellow.
Following a most enjoyable dinner, Lion Grady Rogers introduced Geddings who then proceeded with formal installation of the entire slate
of officers. Besides Hubbard, they are Shari Bryson, first vice-president; Willard Lance, second vicepresident; Grady Rogers, third vicepresident; Lisa Drake, secretarytreasurer; Jerry Stover, tail twister; Robert Wright, Lion tamer; Olin Newby and Robbie Drake, one-year directors; and Buzzy Randall and Smythe Newsome, two-year directors.
Also announced were Bobby West as program chairman and Smythe Newsome as membership chairman.
During a brief business meeting following the installation, Hubbard called the volunteers to help man a concessions booth on The Square during the Fourth of July celebration and fireworks display Tuesday evening, July 4.
Hubbard also confirmed plans for a chicken barbecue on Saturday, August 12. "We want to thank everyone for their response to our barbecue last week (Saturday, June 24)," she said. "We were completely sold out before we started serving."
Plans were also discussed for a concessions stand at the annual Labor Day celebration in early September at Crawfordville.
