Seeing a Hilton in the Hilton

Mary Craven and Mandy Whisnant have moved the

office for their Grate Fires business from the corner on The Square in Downtown Washington to Mary's guest house at 402 North Alexander. Their show room and warehouse is located in the old Lindsey Chevrolet building at 22 West Square. This is where Milton Roberts produces the grates and other related items associated with the building and where they can be seen.

Several weeks ago, Frank Spradlin Renovations purchased the three store front buildings at 17, 19, and 21 West Robert Toombs Avenue, just past Tena's Gifts and Jewelry. His plan was to renovate the 21 West building and refurbish the other two and either rent them or sell them. Within a week's time,

Paradise Acquisitions, a local business, purchased the buildings from Frank and retained him to do the renovation. The building is to house a new business called The Fountain Salon and Spa, which will include massage therapy, cosmetology, nails, and other services. Cynthia Altman's Washington Dance Academy will still be in the middle building with a facelift for the front. The small building which used to be a book store will be renovated and available for rent.

Saturday's Ride for Gary Poker Run to benefit the family of Sheriff Gary Rogers was termed a success even though rain prevented some motorcyclists from participating. Gary himself was present for a little while, as was his good friend and former deputy sheriff, Barry Bailey.

Be on your best behavior 'cause you never know who you'll meet.

Justin Holmes, Lizzie Newsome's friend who plays shortstop in the Frontier League in Traverse City, Michigan, was with his team in O'Fallon, Missouri, where they were playing a series of games. In the Hilton Hotel where the team was staying, Justin saw celebrity Paris Hilton, daughter of THE Hiltons of hotel fame.

John and Lynn Morrow, son and daughter-in-law of John and Marjorie Morrow of WashingtonWilkes, are teachers in Northern China. They have just returned to China from a visit here in Washington Wilkes. They recently met a man in China who was also from Georgia and when the man found out they were from Georgia he asked if they knew where Washington is. Then he wanted to know if they knew Steve and Eleanor Blackmon, and of course they did. He was Joe May from Athens and his mother, Mattie May, had worked with Eleanor in the Girl Scouts. While they were talking, a lady approached them saying that she had overheard their conversation and that she had visited Steve and Eleanor in Washington several times. Her name was Carol Woodford and she had had an apartment next to the Blackmons' daughter, Myra, when they both lived in Savannah and had accompanied Myra to Washington to visit. Joe May has a twin brother -

Tommy - and the Blackmons and Mays have vacationed together in Florida through the years.

News came just as I was finishing this column (Tuesday) that Watchmaker's Restaurant in The Fitzpatrick has closed its doors and gone out of business. Rich, Misty, Jack, and Dalton will be leaving Washington-Wilkes. No more information is available to me at this time. We will miss them and their service.

Allen Burton was the speaker at the Monday night meeting of the Civil War Roundtable at Watchmakers Restaurant. He spoke about the old Irvin Guard which became the Irvin Artillery and Allen says

Fannie Andrews referred to the Guard-Artillery as the "flower of the community." From what I hear, Allen's presentation was both authoritative and interesting.

Pam McCarty had an interesting visitor in her Bee Southern shop last week. A couple from Highlands, N.C., came in and they commented on what a nice town WashingtonWilkes is. Pam assured them that it is a super town and told them about some of the things going on and the good qualities of the community as a whole. She mentioned that when a fellow citizen has a problem, everybody pulls together to help out. They asked about the "Ride For Gary" sign on The Square and she told them about Gary's medical problems and expenses, and that the ride was to benefit the family. They purchased some items, and in a little while, the man came back and gave her a $100 bill for Gary and his family. It's good to know that there are caring people in the world.

The new Surgical Unit at Wills Memorial Hospital has been completed and there are plans for a ribbon cutting and open house. The Surgical Unit is proving to be very successful and has already benefited many Wilkes Countians through its service. Plans are to expand services into other areas in a few months.

Bill Sleighter has made a beautiful table and donated it to the Wills Memorial Hospital Auxiliary to be raffled at the Auxiliary's fashion show on August 12. You can see the table in the doorway at Poss-Ace Hardware Downtown and read a description of it elsewhere in this paper. The cherry wood used in the table was cut by Dr. David Stubbs who lives in the Tignall area, and his dad when the doctor was just 10 years old. You will want to get your tickets for a chance to win the table. They are available at Poss-Ace or by calling Sandy Burton, chairman of the fashion show, at 706-6782333.

Christina Albertson, Joni Bruce, and Joyce Clemmons, students at Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School, have returned from a fabulous European Trip with the People to People Student Ambassador Class of 2006, founded in 1956 by United States President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The students were gone for three weeks and visited France, Switzerland, Austria, and Italy. You can read more about their trip in another article.

Saturday is Adopt a Pet Day at the Farmers Market on Court Street. Many animals will be present, ready for adoption, and there will be fun things too. There will also be tickets available for the raffle of a doghouse and a cathouse to benefit the Washington-Wilkes Animal Shelter.

It's good to have rain! Rainfall on Hill Street since last Tuesday has been 1.1 inch, with a total of two inches for the month. But Norris says that out at Sandtown he has recorded two inches for the past week and a total of 5.6 inches for the month.
