Hand-made curly maple table to be raffled by WMH auxiliary
Bill Sleighter (left) made the beautiful table shown in the picture and donated it to the Wills Memorial Hospital Auxiliary to raffle as a benefit for Wills Memorial Hospital. On the right is Sandy Burton, Auxiliary president. In conjunction with the Wills Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Fashion Show on August 12, a raffle will be conducted for a beautiful table made by Bill Sleighter of Washington Wilkes.
The table has a unique top made from curly maple, sometimes called "tiger maple" or "fiddleback." The distinctive wavy or rippled appearance of the grain is rare and occurs once in several thousand trees.
The legs and side rails are Georgia grown black cherry trees which
produce a bitter fruit used in winemaking, flavor for brandy, liquers, jellies, and preserves. The cherry trees were cut by Dr. David Stubbs of Washington-Wilkes and his dad in 1956 when Dr. Stubbs was just 10 years old. The value of the table is estimated to be $400.
Tickets for the raffle are $2 each or three for $5.00 and may be obtained at Poss-Ace Hardware where the table is being displayed; from Auxiliary members; or by calling Sandy Burton at 706-678-2333.
