We've had some scorching weather and it's the talke of the town. We finally did get some rain Friday night which was a welcomed relief and we enjoyed it very much and are so thankful. Sardis Baptist Church had good services Monday, Tuesdsay and Wednesday nights of last week. Rev. Chris Carpenter brought some mighty dynamic messages and good singing was led by Dr. Malcolm McDonald with Betty Carpenter at the piano. Special singing was by Rev. Carpenter and his wife Janice and the Sardis Ensemble consisting of Joyce Fry, Denise Armour, Rebekah Echols, Lindley Hal, and Monica Walker. Rev. John Mark Carpenter is interim pastor. I did not get to go to the Wednesday night service because I came down with something with flu-like symptoms and was very sick. I am better now, but still feel the effects of it. Ruth Flynt checked on me every day. Bonnie Boatwright went to Lexington Monday at noon to Clark Cemetery to visit with the family and friends of Sadie Graham Thaxton who died last Friday. I missed the service in Athens at Trinity Baptist Church Monday morning, but I got to the cemetery in time to visit with everyone who came out to the gravesite. Sadie was the wife of my cousin, Lewis Thaxton of Athens. On my way back home I stopped in to see J.W. and Kathleen Canup in Lexington and we watched a video of their grandson, Sean's wedding. Then when I got to Centerville I dropped in to see Sybil Vaughn and 3njoyed my visit and delicious refreshments with her. Norman and Joan Echols have enjoyed having their grandchildren from Virginia Beach, Virginia, visit them during the summer. They are Lauren, Julia and Victoria, children of Mr. and Mrs. Shane Echols. Visiting George and ann Wideman over the week were Tom Hardy, Gene Winfrey, James, David, and Mathew Wideman. Ann visited in the Wilkes Health Care Center in Washington, Mrs. Laura Hester, Mrs. Dot Hardy, and Mrs. Mary Wright. She also visited Buster and Sandy Winfrey and Ralph and Elizabeth Smith. Ruth Flynt spent the day Thursday in Bogart with her daughter, Jane Bailey, who had surgery on her hand Wednesday. Jane is doing well. Jane's husband is our mail carrier, Melvin Bailey. Mozelle Burt and son, David Burt of Augusta, spent the day last Thursday with Sybil Vaughn and Betty Berry, and little Bradley, and just enjoyed the day at Betty's house. Johnny Boatwright attended a teachers conference and workshop at the Waverly Hotel in Atlanta Sunday through Friday. Prayers are for Seba Williamson, Pete Poss, Gary Rogers, Kathryn Padgett, Ellie Frey, Jonathan Grier, Jason Thrasher, Sherry Newsome, Roberta Roper, Mike Webb, Stephanie Chapman, Helen Cowart, Bobby Parton, George and Ann Wideman, Dorothy Callaway, Kristy Booth, Martha Williford, J.W. Canup, Sharon Smith, Joe Jones, and Rubye Armour, all the sick and bereaved, the servicemen and women and all the veterans. Barry and Dana Echols spent Sunday and Sunday night with Fred Corbett. Others to visit him during the week were J.W. and Bonnie Boatwright, Dan Corbett, Shawn
Turner, Ruth Flynt, Shirley Bufford, Malcolm McDonald, Thomas Wideman, and Richard and Betty Byrd. Hats off to those good old REA boys who were on the ball when a tree toppled back of our house Saturday and fell on a power line pulling the line loose from the house. In a matter of minutes Douglas Mathews, Larry Chapman, and Tim Wright were here to check itout and after going to get another truck got it fixed up in no time. Malvin and Kay Vaughn of Marietta spent the weekend with Mrs. Annie Blanche Vaughn. Tim and Gail Stewart were helping their daughter, Alyssa, move into her apartment in Augusta over the weekend. Alyssa will start school at Augusta State University in August. Billy Walker celebrated a birthday July 17. A family celebration was given at the lakesie home of Cliff and Janet Lewis, Ashton and Heyden, in the mountains of North Georgia near Clayton. Joining the Lewises were Billy and Doris Walker, Mike and Debra Sherrer, Whiteney and Lindsay Sherrer, Sidney and Cheryl Walker, Clifron, Alex and Taylor, John and Becky Orr, Walker and Isabella, for a day of fun, food, and excitement. The grownups enjoyed sitting on the deck watching the young ones swim and have water fun. It was cool and they enjoyed watching the boats. Margie Randall and Merelen Thornton enjoyed sightseeing about Washington and eating at the Home Caf one day. Paul and Hannah Wright and Ava enjoyed eating Sunday dinner with Tim and Gail Stewart and Alyssa. Becky Williams of Homer spent Saturday night with Peggy Echols. Gloria Hardy enjoyed a nice visit with Ruth Flynt Sunday afternoon. Bobby Arnold of Winterville spent Friday with Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Smith. A mystery lady from North Carolina also visited with them one day. It was someone they had known in the past, but they couldn't think of who it could be and didn't find out, each one thinking the other knew. Rubye Armour continues to improve nicely after knee replacement surgery. She has had a lot of company and phone calls. Frances Fendley accompanied Debra Armour to Crawford one day to visit Melvie Esco at Quiet Oaks Nursing Home. Shirley Chafin, along with Troy and Haley, was busy getting supper ready for a bunch of family members Sunday evening. Sybil Hayes, Tim and Allison Hayes, and Harley Grace, and Clay and Vickie Stevens and Kayla had Sunday supper with Peggy Echols. Ruby Arnold, Dorothy Callaway, and Nell Hubbard went to Snellville to visit their sister, Martha Williford, who is in the hospital there. They also went to visitation at Hopkins Funeral Home in Washington and to the funeral of Earline Kennedy at Washington Memorial Gardens. Ruby and Dorothy enjoyed attending church at Sardis Sunday. Dorothy Callaway is scheduled for surgery this week. J.W. Canup is doing much better after being in the Athens Regional Hospital last week. Bonnie Boatwright joined J.W. and Kathleen Canup and Margaret Peterman of Lexington and Fran Thaxton Tuesday afternoon to go to Elberton to play bingo at Wendy's.
