Check forgery ring arrests lead July law enforcement

The arrest of six members of a check forgery ring leads the July roundup of law enforcement activities in Wilkes County.

On July 11, a teller at the downtown bank became suspicious about the signature on a check from a local merchant. She checked the signature against bank records, and when the signatures did not match, she informed a bank officer who called 911.

Washington Police Lt. Benny Johnson investigated, and found that the suspect, Cedric Bernard Zackary, 39, of Atlanta, had entered the bank with two other black males and that all three had presented checks to different tellers. All three checks were found to be stolen from a local business.

Two of the checks had already been cashed and the men had already left the bank. Police conducted a search of the area but did not find them. Zackary was taken into custody and charged with forgery in the first degree.

The next day, Washington Police officers went to a local motel and arrested Brian Lee Davis, 30, of Land 0 Lakes, Florida, who was charged with four counts of forgery in the first degree; and one count each of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, possession of drug-related objects, and possession of tools for the commission of a crime. He is held on $85,000 bond.

Police also arrested Lisa Starks, 22, of Washington, who was charged with four counts of forgery in the first degree; and one count each of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, transactions in drug-related objects, and possession of tools for the commission of a crime. She is also held on $85,000 bond.

Douglas D. Collins, 26, of Rayle, was arrested at the same time. Collins, too was charged with four counts of forgery in the first degree; and one count each of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, transactions in drug-related objects, and possession of tools for the commission of a crime. He is also charged with escape. He is held on $95,000 bond.

Corey R. Grant, 18, of Wilkes County, was also arrested July 11 and charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana. He was held on $5,000 bond.

A few minutes later, David L. Lewis, 25, of Washington, was arrested at his home. He was charged with one count of forgery in the first degree. He is held on $10,000 bond.

In other law enforcement action, Calvin Blackburn, 27, of Crawfordville, was arrested July 31 by the Georgia State Patrol and charged with driving on a revoked or suspended license and with a traffic charge. He was held for Greene County authorities.

Matthew Aaron Braxton, 18, of Wilkes County, was arrested July 31 by Wilkes County deputies and charged with one charge of battery. He was released on $3,000 bond.

Darian Lenard Mickens, 32, of Washington, was arrested July 29 by Wilkes County deputies and charged with deposit account fraud. He was released on payment of $195.

Santos Amaya, 31, of Hartwell, Ga., was arrested July 25 by Wilkes County deputies and charged with simple battery. He was held on $3,500 bond.

Paula Michelle Grant, 24, of Washington, was arrested July 24 by Washington Police and charged with simple battery. She was held on $3,000 bond.

Jontu Jamal Cofer, 26, of Washington, was arrested July 24 by Wilkes County deputies and charged with aggravated battery. He was released on $12,000 bond.

Jennifer Mills, 26, of Washington, was arrested July 21 by Wilkes County deputies and charged with three counts of deposit account fraud. She was released on $248 cash bond.

Kristi D. Williams, 22, of Wilkes County, was arrested July 21 by Wilkes County deputies and charged with two counts of deposit account fraud. She was released on payment of $361 cash fine.

Wesley Endler Walker, 22, of Jacksonville, Fla., was arrested July 23 by the Georgia State Patrol and charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana and speeding. He was released on $694 cash bond.

Ricardo V. Owens, 22, of Washington, was arrested July 21 by Wilkes County deputies and charged with a probation violation.

Robert Thomas Walton, 43, of Washington, was arrested July 18 by parole authorities and charged with a parole violation.

Eddie Lee Jackson, 38, of Washington, was arrested July 18 by Washington Police and charged with disorderly conduct. He was released on $552 bond.

Kevin Tyrone Brittain, 20, of Wilkes County, was arrested July 17 by Washington Police and charged with a probation violation.

John Lee Lewis, 45, of Crawfordville, was arrested July 14 by Wilkes County deputies and charged with a probation violation.

Peter Edward Perkins III, 39, of Washington, was arrested July 14 by Wilkes County deputies and charged with aggravated assault. He was released on $10,000 bond.

Thurston Cade Jr., 43, of Tignall, was arrested July 16 by the Georgia State Patrol and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol; speeding; and violation of a license requirement. He was released on $2,500 bond.

Curtis Turner, 50, of Washington, was arrested July 13 by Wilkes County deputies and charged with obstruction or hindering law enforcement officers. He was released on $5,000 bond.

Willie Ed Gresham, 55, of Washington, was arrested July 14 by Washington police and charged with disorderly conduct. He was released on $600 bond.

Willie Danner Jr., 22, of Washington, was arrested July 12 by Wilkes County deputies and charged with a probation violation.

Natasha Smith, 26, of Washington, was arrested July 12 by Wilkes County deputies and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and with a traffic violation. She served a 24-hour sentence and was released.

Mitchell R. Johnson, 35,of Crawfordville, was arrested July 11 by Wilkes County deputies and held on a probation violation.

Ronnie Miller, 36, of Washington, was arrested July 10 by Wilkes County deputies and charged with felony burglary. He was released on $8,000 bond.

George Gates, 19, of Washington, was arrested July 7 by Washington Police and charged with disorderly conduct. He was released on $552 bond.

Alma Chapman, 47, of Washington, was arrested July 7 by Washington Police and charged with disorderly conduct. No bond was noted.

Telly Savales Barksdale, 29, of Tignall, was arrested July 7 by the Georgia State Patrol and charged with driving with an open container of alcohol, and with driving with a revoked or suspended license. He was released on $1,750 bond.

Lloyd Gladmon, 59, of Washington, was arrested July 7 by Washington Police and charged with obstruction or hindering of law enforcement officers. He was held on $3,000 bond.

Ronell W. Young, 19, of Washington, was arrested July 7 by Washin ington Police and charged with one count of trespass, and with disorderly conduct. He was held on $969 bond.

Jose Roberto Hernandez Rios, 27, of Forest Park, Ga., was arrested July 7 by the Georgia State Patrol and charged with driving on a revoked or suspended license; and with speeding. He was released on $1,492 bond.

Antquan L. Milton, 21, of Washington, was arrested July 6 by Wilkes County deputies and held on a probation violation.

Brenda Lynn Smith, 50, of Washington, was arrested July 1 by Washington Police and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, and with a traffic violation. She was released on $1,800 bond.

Demetris Gibson, 20, of Crawfordville, was arrested July 2 by Washington Police and charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute; plus a traffic violation and a license violation. He was held on $28,000 bond.

Terry Moore, 48, of Washington, was arrested July 2 by Washington Police and charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana and held on a state probation violation.

Jeffery Harris, 39, of Lincolnton, was arrested July 2 by Washington Police and charged with driving under the influence and with speeding. He was released on $2,750 bond.

Chris Grant, 19, of Wilkes County, was arrested July 1 by Washington Police and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. He was held on $25,000 bond.

Willie Turner, 28, of Rayle, was arrested July 3 on a probation violation.

Terrance L. Jones, 26, of Lincolnton, was arrested July 6 by Wilkes County deputies and held on child support contempt charges.

Jason Alexander Price, 27, of Washington, was arrested July 2 by Washington Police and charged with battery. He was released on $3,500 bond.

Robert McClendon, 32, of Elberton, was arrested July 4 by Washington Police and charged with simple battery. He was released on $4,000 bond.

Megan Brooke Swahn, 20, of Alpharetta, was arrested July 4 by the Georgia State Patrol and charged with driving under the influence; misdemeanor possession of marijuana; and with speeding. She was released on $1,388 bond.

Steven Guin, 19, of Lincolnton, was arrested July 2 by Wilkes County deputies and charged with driving under the influence and with a traffic violation. He was released on $765 bond.

Kenneth Wayne Reid, 17, of Washington, was arrested July 2 by Wilkes County deputies and charged with statutory rape. He was released on $6,000 bond.
