Kiwanians Bill Steed, Bill Boyd, Carlton Norris, and Bes Moore grilled hamburgers and hotdogs for JUMP students at their annual swimming party last week. The garden, gazebo, and pool were buzzing last Thursday evening when 18 JUMP children, along with their mentors and volunteers, gathered to enjoy a refreshing swim at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carlton Norris, followed by charcoal-grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, brownies, cake, bottled water, and soft drinks.

The Juvenile Mentoring Program (JUMP) July monthly activity for the youth, their mentors, and volunteers was sponsored by the Washington Kiwanis Club. This is the third year for the "JUMP in the pool."

The Kiwanians provided and prepared the food. Blake Thompson, director of EMS, was on hand for any medical emergencies. Other participating Kiwanians included Bill Boyd, Bes Moore, Bill Steed, Al and Sharlene Zima, and executive director Carolyn Reyholds from JUMP's parent organization, Wilkes County Community Partnership.

Carlton Norris extended a warm welcome and blessed the food. JUMP student Jemi Davis gave a special thanks to their hosts and to the Kiwanis Club for sponsoring the JUMP Pool Party. Swimming and good food were followed by a group birthday sing-a-long for Carolyn Reynolds, whose birthday was July 27.

"The children enjoy coming to this event each year; however, if possible, I think the 'fun factor' was much higher this year - higher than the heat index!" JUMP Coordinator Amethyst Wynn said.

Reynolds commented, "The Kiwanis Club continues to be a leading example of a way to be both supportive and engaged. As a fellow member, I personally extend my thanks and gratitude for their gene r o s i t y. "

"We are hopeful that the civic community and citizens at large will continue to partner with the mentoring program to provide a variety of important resources which will help sustain this initiative," stated Reynolds.
