Amy Denise Smothers marries Kevin Thomas Wheelis on Aug. 5
Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Thomas Wheelis Amy Denise Smothers of Valdosta and Kevin Thomas Wheelis of Brunswick were united in marriage in an impressive doublering ceremony Saturday, August 5, at two o'clock in the afternoon at the First Assembly of God in Valdosta. Rev. William Cotteril of Valdosta officiated.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kedric B. Smothers of Valdosta.
The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Wheelis of Lawrenceville.
Candles and greenery were used in decorating the sanctuary.
Mrs. David Springfield of Valdosta was pianist. Vocalists were Mr. and Mrs. Tracy Smothers of Riverview, Fla., brother and sisterin law of the bride, and Jea-Otiss Carter of Warner Robins.
Drew Martin of Bethlehem served as best man. Usher-groomsmen were Michael Anthony of St. Marys, Jake James of Rincon, Matt Roberts of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Jeff Moran of McDonough.
Mrs. Steve Chase of Lakeland, Fla., was her sister's matron of honor. Bridesmaids were Ashley Wheelis of Knoxville, Tenn., sister of the bridegroom, Anne Howard, Becky Johnson, and Katie Allen, all of Valdosta.
Their tea-length gowns of pool blue satin were fashioned with empire waists with matching ribbon detail. They carried bouquets of pink roses accented with greenery and tied with pink ribbon.
The flower girl, Natalie Chase of Lakeland, Fla., niece of the bride, wore an ivory satin dress with satin rose accents and carried a basket filled with rose petals the bride had saved as gifts from the bridegroom.
Zachary Smothers of Riverview, Fla., nephew of the bride, was the ring bearer.
Given in marriage by her parents, the bride was elegant in her gown of ivory satin with cascading detailing on the front.
Her headpiece featured crystal and pearls.
She carried a bouquet of pink and white roses tied with white satin ribbon.
For her daughter's wedding Mrs. Smothers chose a cream pantsuit. The blouse was accented with gold trim on the collar and the pants were covered with a split chiffon skirt.
Mrs. Wheelis, the bridegroom's mother, wore mint green fashioned with a lace bodice and accented with clear sequins.
Their flowers were white orchids tied with white ribbon and accents.
Reception
Following the ceremony the bride's parents entertained in the reception hall of the First Assembly of God.
The bride's table was overlaid in white linen with a pink cloth for accent. The four-tiered wedding cake, made by Mrs. Michael Anthony of St. Marys, featured alternating square and circular tiers. The lemon cake with lemon custard filling was covered in butter cream icing. Topping the cake was the letter "W" representing the couple's last name. Displayed on the table with the cake was the bride's bouquet.
The bridegroom's cake was accented with caramelized fruit.
In addition to cake, guests enjoyed a buffet of assorted cold cuts, fruits, dips and sauces.
Other tables continued the decorating scheme of white cloths with pink overlays.
Also used in decorating about the hall were pictures of the bride and bridegroom from childhood through their courtship.
Following a wedding trip to Las Vegas, Nev., Mr. and Mrs. Wheelis are making their home in Brunswick.
Among the guests attending were the bridegroom's great-aunt, Mrs. Robert Wallace, of Washington; also, Jerry Stover of Washington and Theron Wallace of Conyers.
Rehearsal Dinner
Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Wheelis were hosts at a rehearsal dinner at Covington's Restaurant in Valdosta on the eve of the marriage of Amy Denise Smothers and Kevin Thomas Wheelis.
Roses decorated the tables overlaid in white linens.
Guests enjoyed a delicious buffet of fried chicken, ham, squash casserole, green beans, creamed corn, twice baked potato casserole, and assorted breads. Desserts included choices of banana pudding, key lime pie, German chocolate cake and crme brulee.
