A historic tree is planted

2006-10-19 / News

The Iris Garden Club planted a purple flowering Chaste Tree on the grounds of the Robert Toombs House State Historic Site in Washington, Georgia. Marcia Campbell, Interpretive Ranger and Iris Garden Club member, stands next to the tree, which was grown from seed from the "River Farm Chaste Tree." President George Washington, who was greatly admired by Robert Toombs, once owned the River Farm. Today it is the home of the American Horticultural Society. The tree, obtained from "American Forests," a non-profit environmental organization, was planted to beautify the garden, and to support the 2005-2007 Patriotic/Historic Tree Project of the National Garden Club.
