SOUTHERN FRIED FOOTBALL
Here's a news flash for traditional Southern football power: "Don't take Wake Forest and Vanderbilt lightly!" The Demon Deacons and Commodores served notice with wins over N.C. State and Georgia respectively that they can play really good football. Throw in Auburn's mild upset of Florida and you had another great weekend of college football - Southern style.
What about this weekend? Will we see more of the same?
Virginia over UNC by 7 - Tonight's ESPN contest does not hold much interest for anyone outside of Charlottesville and Chapel Hill.
Louisville over Syracuse by 20 - The Cards stay unbeaten without maximum effort.
Maryland over N.C. State by 3 - Another close loss for the Wolfpacks sends Coach Amato to the post office to mail out a few resumes.
Virginia Tech over Southern Miss by 10 - The Hokies time-up for Clemson. If they are not careful, however they could be embarrassed.
Arkansas over Ole Miss by 17 - The Hogs are rolling behind freshman QB Mustain.
UPSET: Vandy over South Carolina by 12 - The Commodores gained confidence by whipping Georgia last week. Carolina is very predictable on offense and fairly weak on defense.
Miami over Duke by 21 - If the Canes have enough players to field a team, they should be able to defeat Duke. The Blue Devils are planted securely in the ACC basement.
Georgia over Mississippi State by 21 - It does not matter who plays QB when you play poor Mississippi State. Georgia also has serious problems on defense, but the Starkville Dogs don't have the fire power to exploit the situation.
Tennessee over Bama by 14 - Tennessee's offense is building steam. Alabama is struggling.
FSU over Boston College by 3 - Home field advantage provides the Noles with a narrow victory.
Clemson over Georgia Tech by 3 - The game of the week in the South, and possibly nationally, should go right down to the wire. The Clemson crowd could make the difference.
