W-WCHS Ga. Math League contest begins

Fifty-eight students in grades 9 - 12 from Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School have voluntarily signed-up to compete in the 2006-2007 GA Math League Competition. According to their website (http:// www.mathleague.com/), "The Math League is dedicated to bringing challenging mathematics materials to students. The Math League specializes in math contests, books, and computer software designed to stimulate interest and confidence in mathematics for students from the 4th grade through high school. Over 1 million students participate in Math League contests each year. Contest problems are designed to

cover a range of mathematical knowledge for each grade level. All of the problems on each contest require no additional knowledge of mathematics beyond the grade level they test."

The contest consists of six, 30- minute tests given throughout the school year on dates established by the league. Test questions are thought-provoking and challenging problems. Scheduled contest dates are: October 24, 2006; November 28, 2006; January 9, 2007; February 6, 2007; March 6, 2007; and April 10, 2007. All Math League students take the test simultaneously in the media center during homeroom on the scheduled dates.

After the tests are scored, the top five scores are totaled and sent to the state level as the school score. The Math League from WWCHS is then entered into the competition with other schools around the state. Final results and standings will be announced in May prior to the end of the school year.

In addition to the state-level competition, WWCHS Math League students compete with each other at the school level. The student with the highest score for each grade level and the overall winner for our school will be given awards and recognized on Honors Day in May. The math department at WWCHS organizes and sponsors the contest.
